I currently have a great job but want something more out of life. So this leaves me with the big life question.
Do you risk your current life status to possible have more money and a better quality of life. But if your risk fails you are left with nothing. Failing puts you and your family at risk.
Or
Stay with what you know and are comfortable with. Life is good but it could be better.

That's always a tough one, Steve. There is something admirable about the person who just goes for what they believe in and risks losing the comfort and safety they currently know in order to find a better quality of life. However, there are such things as stupid, senseless risks (...Iraq war, oh, wait, thats a different post, sorry).
I have faced this sort of thing before, the big difference although being that I don't have a family to support and if my risk doesn't pay off, I just have to worry about myself. Obviously, a fraction of the concern compared to providing for your family. However different the circumstances may be, one thing to keep in mind is that you can try to figure out the amount of risk you might face. It's going to be vague, but it might help you put things in perspective. Think of it as a mathematic problem. Lets say there are number values for such things as money to be earned, future within the field, security within the field, and of course, reality of doing well in the field. Each value is a number between one and ten. The higher the number the greater the risk is in doing badly for that specific category. Enough research into the field and you can get a realistic idea of what it is your facing and how risky it is. In the end, you will still be taking a risk, yet you will have a realistic perspective of it and you won't be shooting in the dark.
I don't know if this makes any sense, but it's the formula I used to help me decide against being a professional birthday clown.
Always have a plan B. Thats is all...
I say life is no fun without taking any chances.
I say you are only going to live once, do what makes you happy. Your family loves you and will support you in whatever choices you make. You are no idiot so I am sure you will not find yourself out on the street. Just please don't become a male stripper.
I have always dreamed of being a over weight, hairy, male stripper. I think there could be a market for this.
Sreve that is hard but when I talked with you a couple of weeks ago you had a great plan to try to do your bussines on the side to see if it takes off and through yourself in it however, I think you have already made up your mind but you are seeking aproval the only one who can truly awnser your question and know if this is a realality or a wim is you and your wife.. well Good luck in what ever you decide..
I don't think it is an "or". You can have both... in fact that is what I would suggest. Dip your toe into the self-employment pond and see if you like the water; don't dive into it.
Unless you have a sure-fire business or a large investor, you are looking at a large risk. Stability is not the same as inaction. You can take risks without throwing stability out the window.
Dig?
You've answered your own question.
I failed three times in business and once with a whole house full of kids to support. The IRS even seized my vehicles and bank accounts for unpaid taxes. The Lord helped my family to survive even without declaring bankruptcy. But...I still tried again and the last time I suceeded. Failing sucks...but the lessons it teaches are invaluable and makes it awfully sweet when you finally suceed. Some people that smarter than me never failed in business.
